When you think of piracy you probably think of a move taped by someone in the theater with people walking by and terrible sound, or of a guy on the corner selling bootleg DVD’s and CD’s. However, there is a new piracy and it is internet piracy. Internet piracy is when people download music or movies illegally off the internet. It is also file sharing. Most people do not realize that sharing a music file with a friend is actually piracy. Many people download music and then send a great song to a friend or two, then that friend may send it to a friend and so on until many people have the song that one person downloaded.
The question is who looses off of internet piracy and I think that the answer to that is the artist and the producers. Artists and producers make money off of the sales of the songs and albums, so if people are downloading the songs for free off the internet then they are loosing money. I know that internet piracy is a huge problem for the music industry but I really do not think that there is much they can do to stop it. No matter how they try to protect the music from piracy there will always be hackers to break through.
I think that the major reason that internet piracy is so big is because of IPods. With an IPod you can choose to download one song at a time and not an entire album. When I was a kid if you wanted to get just one song and not the whole album you had to wait for the song to play on the radio and try to tape it. If that did not work then you had t go to the store and buy the album. Of course you could always tape a friends tape but it was much more difficult than today’s method. Now kids can take out their IPods and go on the internet and fins the song. Then down load it. It is so easy to get songs off the internet that most people do not even think twice about it.
In the end it is the artist and the producers that suffer form the loss of money. Most people will continue to download free music. It is up to the music industry to find new ways to make money off of their songs.

I enjoyed your blog in internet piracy, its amazing how we do thing especially on the internet without thinking that this is an illegal act. But if it illegal, which I know it is; how is it possible that the internet companies can have so many different sites that gives us access to this kind of information. Just maybe if we weren’t tempted with all of these internet sites with our I pods, and nano for free music downloads that we would be forced to purchase the cd’s the right way. I’m not sure if this internet piracy thing will every be able to get put under controlled, due to possible violating some one rights, you know since we our in a sue happy country that might not be possible. What I do know is that the musicians and the music industry are the one that loses and all of the little people under them loses as well. They have a job to do and families to take care of , so im sure they just want to get paid as well.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to comment on your blog about piracy. I like the fact that you commented at the start about the other two prevalent forms of piracy. I actually think that the kind of piracy that is don't on the street corners is much more damaging to the music and film industry then of that on the internet. The reason I feel the way I do is because for the simple fact that there is an exchange of actual money, unlike internet piracy. I think that you can have an actual account of monies that are being exchanged and lost. I also believe that this type of piracy would be a lot easier to police and crack down on. It's funny but I am sure that we all see them out there and are well aware that what they are doing is illegal and we are also aware that we never see anything being done about it. I would think that if millions of dollars were being lost by this, that I might not see it on nearly every corner. Internet piracy is so much different to me because of the fact that file sharing seems so much less serious and it’s not done for a profit. I can understand not wanting to spend a dollar per song. I do like the fact that now there are sites that you can get unlimited downloads for a whole month for a small fee as little as 10 dollars. I think that this type of site can actually curb piracy by making it more economical.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very informative and interesting blog on Internet piracy. These days, downloading free music off of the Internet is too easy and also not as risky as it should be. It is so true when you say that people do not even know they are committing a crime when they share songs with their own friends. So many people will download music and share the music with one friend; who goes on to share it with another friend. It becomes a never-ending cycle of piracy. I also agree with you that the artists and producers loose a great deal of money from piracy. Local music stores that sell CD’s will also take a hit from Internet piracy. Especially when the economy is doing horrible, these stores will begin to go out of business. Quick and easy is how people want to obtain their music in today’s world and they are doing exactly that by downloading music illegally. You are completely right in my opinion when you state that there will always be those who buy and sell copyrighted music without permission. This fact is inevitable! Obtaining free music is too hard for many people to just give up without some resistance.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that piracy revolves around ipods. Ipods create piracy because you can download music from pretty much any website and upload them on to your ipod. This is a bunch of bs because people should not be aloud too take this music and download it for free. Its too bad that not all the people that commit this crime will get caught. They should face jail time and fines if they do get caught. And when people do this who looses? Many people believe that the consumer is the one that looses. But in reality the producer and the artists are the ones that loose. They are the ones who make a profit off of the sales of these songs and if people are downloading them for free, there is no money to be made. These people are just trying to make a living at what they are good at and people are basically stealing from them! I believe that websites that promote the free sales of music should be banned from being put onto the internet to help try and stop all the piracy. If the government stepped up and tried to ban piracy and these websites, I dont believe that this would be such a big problem.
