I do not think that analyzing music is for everyone. Some people want to know what the songs are about, while others just want to listen. I think that some people are more in tune with poetry and the meaning of music while others are just about enjoying it. I am the type of person who just wants to listen; I do not like interpreting or analyzing the words of a song. I just want to loose my self in a song and not be worried about what it means. I like to just “rock out” and let the music take over. I think that if I stopped to analyze the words and try to figure out the meaning of every song I would not enjoy it nearly as much. All of that to say that there are some songs that I do love the words too and they inspire me. The words are inspirational and make me think. These songs I think about what the words are saying but I still do not think that I analyze it.
On the other hand, my sister is a musician and she loves to analyze music. Not only does she look at the lyrics of the song and decipher what they might mean but she also analyzes the musical instruments in the song. She spends hours looking over songs and enjoys every minute of it. She likes to “pick them apart” and find the “inner meaning”. She says that she appreciates the music more when she knows where it is coming from.
Do I think that she enjoys the music more than me because she know what note it is playing in or what all the lyrics mean, absolutely not. I also do not think that she enjoys it any less. I feel that we both enjoy the music in our own way. We can both “rock out” to the same song and equally enjoy it, but she just knows more of the technical stuff, to each their own.

I'm so the same way with music. I love just to listen to it. In fact I'm doing it right this second . I sing the songs but I'm not really thinking about what they mean. I just love the feelings I get from the music. They give me an energy boost . Listening to music is almost like drinking a giant energy drink but without all the carbs and sugar. Music is much better for you. I think its awesome for those who like to analyze music , but it's just not my cup of tea. I think we are a lot alike when it comes to listening to music.
ReplyDeleteI agree on one thing about analyzing like you said about your sister literally picking apart a song. I find myself doing that a lot being that i have teenagers in the house i hear all types of music also from my fiancĂ©e who loves jazz, gospel and R&B. He tells me about certain songs that he listens to and what they mean, like maybe a jazz song by Sade singing about her pain and her relationships. Some musicians have the whole career in music be about their life. For instance Mary J. Bilge, now from the start of her musical career every album and song that she sang was taken from apart of her life from "Reminisce" to " I'm going down" to "Be happy" we have followed her roller coaster career throughout her music. If you really listen to some songs you can hear certain instruments in the music but I am talking about real artist, bands and musicians. The most unforgettable quote that i have heard about music comes from the movie "White men can't jump" where Wesley Snipes character tells Woody Harrelson's character “you hear the music but you don't listen to the music" and that is common for all of us.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that sometimes picking a part and overanalyzing the meaning doesn't make the music much to enjoy. Sometimes its good to just flow with the music because of the rhythm the music carries with you. Most time when I listen to music I try not to think to much but to just sing along and have fun, sometimes even to pretend and play the instruments. But there are music thats very inspirational and has great meaning behind the music but sometimes just have to pick at it. Like I don't know if you've heard the band Owl City, I don't really understand the meaning of his music but I'm sure he has his own way of writing his moods.
ReplyDeleteAnalyzing music is most definitely not for everyone! Occasionally I analyze a song that has a hidden meaning behind the lyrics and amazing instrumentals. Most of the time I enjoy just sitting back and listening to the music like you do. My brother is also a musician and he likes to appreciate the time and effort that goes in to making very talented music. He is always trying to break the songs down and decipher them. I completely agree with that we can enjoy music just as much as the person who analyzes the music. Although, we probably enjoy the music from very different perspectives as they do. I believe that people who analyze music have a more artistic way of thinking compared to people who just love to “rock out.” Some songs are composed purely for the consumer’s enjoyment and other songs are supposed to be “picked apart” by people like your sister and my brother. And people like you and I are simply meant to just “rock out” to the music. It is good to know that there are people out there who have the same perspective that I do when it comes to music.
